His love of sketching and painting began with stick figures and finger painting in grade school. In his only formal art class during the 4th grade, young Dave did not do well. Poor grades notwithstanding, Dave continued to sketch and paint for his own enjoyment.
His first commercial art job at the age of 16 was as the cartoonist for a local radio magazine in the 1950s. His high school and university biology notes were like a textbook in themselves...fully illustrated. He was urged by several instructors to pursue medical illustration. Medicine was appealing, but the image of a starving artist as an illustrator was not!
Immediately out of high school, Dave entered the U.S. Army and spent his weekends drawing sketches of soldiers' girlfriends from their wallet photos.
"At $1 per sketch, I made more money in two weekends than the Army paid me per month!"
And still today, Dave's unique approach to portraiture continues to be in demand.
